Speaking in Dhangu, Djalu asks his son Larrtjannga about
the yirdaki, and how he learnt to play, yirdaki. 'From
listening to you and other people and maikay (ancestral
song).' Djalu asks which trees yirdaki are made from:
gadayka (stringybark - Dhuwa moiety), gungurru' (woollybutt
- Yirritja moiety) and badawili (bloodwood - a good shade
tree)'. Larrtjannga - in his early 20s - says he's been
listening to the yirdaki and playing it since he was 5
years old. 'I'm confident now, used to it. Now I teach
it to the young boys.' |

The dolphin's cry as it surfaces represents a person's
spirit going back to Burralku, an island far out to sea,
which Westerners might equate with heaven. The dolphin
is crying, crying upright, a cloud is sitting down in
the sea away from the island, the dolphins separate, go
this way, go that way. Swimming and diving into the deep
and leaping into the air, gliding and diving. |
